The truth is, you don't need to know any of this before you start. Whether you've never picked up a crochet hook before or you've had one sitting in a drawer for months waiting for that special moment, a beginner crochet workshop can be the perfect way to finally give it a go!
Learning to crochet is all about taking those first few stitches, getting a little bit of practice and most importantly having fun along the way! At I'm in Stitches Co. my beginner crochet workshops in Belfast are designed to be relaxed, friendly and completely beginner friendly - no crochet experience is needed!
What happens at a beginner crochet workshop?
So now you've booked your first crochet workshop... what's next?
First things first - don't panic! You don't need to arrive knowing how to crochet and you definitely don't need to have it all figured out before you walk through my doors.
My beginner crochet workshops are relaxed, welcoming, beginner-friendly and are designed to help you learn at your own pace! We will start with the basics, including how to hold your crochet hook and yarn, how to make a slip knot and creating your first crochet chain. From here we will work on building your skills step-by step and introducing you to some of the most useful beginner crochet stitches.
There will definitely be a few " Why isn't mine looking like your's" and that's completely normal, that's what I am there for to guide you through each step, helping when you get stuck and show you how to correct the little mistakes along the way!
The best part... you won't just be crocheting and learning stitches, you will be surrounded by other people learning too which makes the whole experience much more relaxed. There is plenty of chats, plenty of yarn and hopefully plenty of laughs along the way!
What do I need to bring?
Not sure what hook to buy? Don't panic! You don't need to bring a suitcase of yarn - although I would love that! 🤣
All your supplies - hook, yarn, project, stitch markers, scissors etc are provided for you ( unless otherwise stated). The only thing you need to bring is yourself, a notebook/phone for notes.

Is crochet difficult to learn?
Honestly... the first few stitches might feel a little strange but that doesn't mean you can't do it!
Like anything new, crochet takes a little bit of practice. At first you might find yourself wondering which way to hold your hook, why your stitches look different from everyone else's or how on earth you manages to lose a stitch!
Guess what- that's completely normal!
When you're learning crochet for beginners the trick is not to learn everything at once. That's why I start with the basics, practicing a few simple stitches allows your hands to get used the movements. Learning in a workshop with other people is helpful because you can have others around you helping to figure the stitches and movements together rather than using a video. There is always someone to answer your questions and help you along when something doesn't go quite right.
So embrace the wonky stitches, every crocheter has been there and are the first steps of learning!
Crochet doesn't need to be perfect it just has to be yours!
Why learn in to crochet in a group?
You can learn to crochet by watching videos at home... but there's something a little special about sitting around a table with other people, hooks in hand, piles of yarn in front of you creating a lovely little community!
Crocheting in a group cuts out trying to figure it all out on your own, there's always someone nearby in the same position as you and you can ask the questions to move onto to the next stitch! You cannot find the community through a video, but in a group you can share ideas, get recommendations and support each other!
